Say Whiskey!

What a weird title, right? I am sure it got your attention, though!

It was after 10pm local time when we pulled into the church parking lot, and after 17 hours of travel, the full weight of leading a mission trip like this really hit me.  The building loomed over us against the dark sky and for the first time in this entire process, I felt anxious and scared. Our guide Luis (who I met once a year ago) explained that the neighbors in the area didn't like Christians, and told us to stay in the church with the door locked.

That night, being completely alone (except for Juan the groundskeeper), in this massive Costa Rican church, we felt a lot like the hobbits when they meet Strider in Bree: Feeling wary about putting complete trust in someone you barely know; but after discussing it we decided to throw our cares onto God and to trust Luis and his family, and believe that everything would work out in God's plan.

I think there is something so beautiful about an experience like this. Obviously we have taken steps to make sure we are secure and that our trip is appropriately planned, but even though we are responsible travelers and missionaries, there is always risk; but that risk gives us the chance to fully rely on God to take care of us. By putting our faith in Him, we can let our guards down, which allows a raw vessel for God to work through to the people of Sarchi, Costa Rica.

I am glad to say that we are in wonderful hands! Our hosts are extremely open and have such wonderful hearts, which makes for a meaningful experience on so many levels. We are able to experience the "tico culture" through their food, language, church services, and even playing soccer... I mean, futbol.  Costa Ricans call themselves "ticos" while we are "gringos." They were sure to point out that they don't mean "gringo" in an offensive way.  Everyone has been extremely friendly and positive.

We are most of the way through our trip, and I feel God's work at hand.

PS: Ticos say "Say whiskey" instead of "Say cheese!" when taking pictures :)
